Mary Lattimore - LA harpist & composer

LA harpist and composer Mary Lattimore, live at Newquay Orchard

Live at Newquay Orchard

With guitarist Neil Halstead & support from Daisy Rickman

Monday 22 August 2022
Doors at 7pm

Location : Yeoman Way, Newquay, TR7 2SL
(parking available at the sports centre car-park)

About Mary Lattimore :

In the beginning of 2020, LA harpist and composer Mary Lattimore travelled to a wintry Newquay, where she recorded her critically-acclaimed album Silver Ladders with producer and guitarist Neil Halstead (Slowdive) over a span of nine days.

Mary’s signature style is refined, sprawling layers of harp reigned in and accented by flourishes of synth and Halstead’s guitar. The music can feel ominous but not by compromising vivid wonder.

Mary’s show under the festoon lights at Newquay Orchard promises to be a very special event indeed. For the first time in the UK she will have Halstead along on guitar to play material from Silver Ladders, as well as performing a varied selection from her impeccable cannon of work.

The one-off Cornwall show is part of an extensive European tour and follows a busy year of dates performing at various festivals and venues around the world.

Pinch Pot Workshop

Learn pinch pottery techniques with Cornwall-based ceramicist Hannah Lawrence.

Sunday 5 June 2022, 11am - 4pm at North Coast Asylum

£25 per person (all materials included).

Glazing and firing of your wares is available at an extra cost of £1 per 100g of fired work (approximately £3 per mug).

We will explore different kinds of pinch pottery techniques. These can act as a foundation to get you confident enough to make at home! We will start with the basics of form and simple vessels and move on to handles, spouts and lids. The outcome will be beautiful functional pots that you can use at home for food and drinks.

Hannah Lawrence is a local ceramicist who specialises in pinch pottery. Formerly the owner and founder of “folklore” a small but thriving craft shop on the old high street, Falmouth. Her work is inspired by the traditional pottery of Africa, Japan and Egypt and aspires towards the art of wood firing. For now Hannah uses local stoneware clays and wood ash glazes. Teaching is an important part of Hannah’s practice as pinching techniques can be much more accessible than wheel thrown pottery. This results in a quick learning curve for students and satisfying results.

“We are so so ecxited to welcome the The French born founding member of the London-based avant-pop icons Stereolab!

In 2009 — the same year Stereolab became inactive — Laetitia ended the Monade project and began to perform solo work under her own name

“New Moon” is the first track from Laetitia Sadier‘s, as yet untitled, forthcoming album that is due to be released in 2022

Laetitia Sadier’s new solo album draws on sounds ranging from French yé-yé to krautrock, though its tone is earthier. It features a duet with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor.”

Mimi Robson + James Midwinter

‘An affinity, a balance’
Closing party

21 April 2022, 6pm - 8pm

Join us as we celebrate the last day of the installation at Slow Response

An affinity, a balance

‘An affinity, a balance’ brings together the work of Mimi Robson and James Midwinter. Their work focuses on similar themes and elements, despite their practices using different mediums and processes.

Both artists respond to moments and textures within nature, distilling them to their essence in order to construct something quietly visceral and moving. Concentrated, rich energy is captured in their mark making and held within a calming empty space.

Mimi’s calligraphic marks reflect upon the part of our consciousness that is attuned to subtle rhythms and dynamics observed in nature. The work, and her process, balances the energies of force and flow, to represent the flux within nature and our own Selves.

James' practice is both an exploration and a representation of his mindstate, driven by personal discoveries and self-learning through therapy. His compositions reflect his continual search for balance, between vibrant emotion, but also control and calm.

Their collaboration with ALMA consists of several works on paper, as well as fabric hangings by Mimi, and a video installation by James.

Hannah Waldron : Care Takers

Hannah Waldron // Care Takers

19 Feb — 02 Apr 2022

19 Feb — 02 Apr 2022

The Picture Room, Newlyn Art Gallery

A new series of work by Hannah Waldron, an artist working predominantly with weaving, from her studio at Potager, near Constantine.

“Care Takers is a body of work that has been produced slowly over the course of a year whilst I have been taking care of my new baby daughter. The act of care-taking became at the forefront of everything for me this year, yet when looking at the numerous acts of care taking place in society and nature, they are so often overlooked and fade into the background of what is valued. I wanted to use this opportunity to bring my attention to and celebrate acts of taking care within my environment; from nature based observations in the garden at my studio, to unseen ways in which care taking and nourishing interaction occurs in nature, for example underground mycelium networks, through to the process of handweaving itself.

These new series of weavings have been produced on a small handloom, using yarn dyed with natural dyes including woad, madder and weld, and embroidered at intervals on long walks around Falmouth whilst my daughter was sleeping.”

The exhibition aims to share the viewpoint of the crisis through the eyes of the Cornish artists.
