The Newquay Monoliths: Nansledan Community Clay Workshop
Do you live, work or visit Nansledan? If so, we have exciting news!
ALMA Artspace and artist Robin Sullivan invite you to join a fun and creative clay workshop as part of Newquay’s public sculpture commission: The Newquay Monoliths.
There are two FREE workshops to choose from:
Saturday 25th January, 10am - 12pm or Wednesday 19th February, 10am - 12pm
Venue: Nansledan Community Centre
Unit 2, Office Building, Stret Myghtern Arthur, Nansledan, Newquay TR8 4UX
Workshop 1: Saturday 25th January, 10am - 12pm
Workshop 2: Wednesday 19th February, 10am - 12pm
Inspired by Newquay’s fascinating ancient history, this project connects the old with the new.
In these playful workshop sessions led by Robin, you will use clay to capture intersting textures, patterns and marks from the local surroundings, that will be used on the Monoliths themselves - three large public sculptures, which will be permanently installed at locations across Newquay: Barrowfields, Newquay Orchard and Nansledan.
The project aims to connect the people who live in Newquay to the history of this place, and to each other.
Everyone is welcome to join these free, playful creative sessions and and no experience is required.
All materials are provided. Just bring your creativity, and maybe an apron.
All children must be supervised by an adult at all times.
Don’t miss this chance to be part of Newquay’s evolving creative story!
This project is commissioned by Cornwall Council Project Experience Newquay. It is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Tom Sewell Exhibition: Newquay Orchard
Now Showing: Tom Sewell Collage, Prints and Cyanotypes
For the next installment of our 2024 programme of artist residencies at Newquay Orchard, ALMA Artspace is delighted to present a new exhibition and workshop project by artist Tom Sewell.
My work investigates human relationships with nature. I use research into (pre)history, mythology, archaeology, language, landscape and life to offer ideas of a space that can be used to transit the porous border between nature and culture; questioning that dualism and exploring how that border moves through time and space. My work touches on ideas of speculative fiction and utopian-idealist narratives. At the core of it I’m asking, where are we?
I am attempting to translate between the elusive material reality of the elemental, more-than-human world (animals, air, plants, stones, water) and concepts of places, stories and objects; navigating the interpretive ambiguities involved in attempting to locate ourselves within nature.
My material practice is concerned with lowering my environmental impact. Works are often temporary and made from scavenged, found or re-purposed natural and human-made materials. Natural materials are returned to their point of finding, to resume their place in cycles of decay.
